I've seen similar splits in organizations that grow. Once they reach a certain scale, they separate the visionaries from the operators, not because the former become useless but because the cadence of competing against OpenAI and Anthropic demands rhythms different from long-term thinking about AGI. It's the same friction that shows up in Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI. DeepMind was founded with the mandate to solve intelligence as a scientific project. Google bought it some years ago with other plans in mind.

What's interesting is that Jeff Dean didn't go to another big tech company. He cofounded Discovery Loop alongside longtime colleagues with a precise goal: automating scientific research itself. That matters. I have no certainty about whether Discovery Loop will work. Automating scientific research is a goal as ambitious as it is vague, and the track record of startups founded by veterans is mixed. What does seem consistent with what we've observed is that these group departures are rarely accidental. Four people with that kind of institutional weight usually leave together because they detected that outside they could move faster and with less bureaucratic friction toward what they actually want to build.

The question that remains open is whether this kind of reshuffling, Hassabis above thinking about philosophy, Kavukcuoglu operating the product, Dean outside reinventing science, simply reflects how large tech organizations mature, or whether it reveals that not even within the companies defining the future of AI is there full consensus about what they're building. The archaeological stones of Bell Labs and Xerox PARC show a similar tendency. The moments of greatest fragmentation of founding talent tend to precede, not follow, the most important technological leaps.
