Cooperation nobody imposes

Cooperation that lasts is almost never born from an order. These articles follow the cases that show it and the ones that complicate it, from Rochdale and Mondragon to digital cooperatives, by way of what Elinor Ostrom found in communities that have governed their commons for centuries without an owner or a state forcing them to.

The ones that show where it breaks are here too, because a cooperative can be captured just like a company, and union leadership can end up serving itself. From those cases the book draws six hypotheses about how to design a society that cooperates without being forced.
