Why systems fall

Systems that promise order tend to fall for similar reasons, even when millennia apart. These articles read the present through that lens, from Göbekli Tepe and Rome to Marienthal and the Industrial Revolution.

None of them claims that history repeats word for word. What comes back are certain conditions, like power that concentrates without answering to anyone, or forced cooperation that lasts only as long as the fear does, and they show up in empires and in companies, in governments of one stripe and the other. The Stones Don't Lie follows twelve thousand years of those patterns.
